Where salt and fresh water meet, a unique life is born; I hope my experiences can foster the growth of others in their environments and passions. Within the border of light and matter are the reflections of autonomy and labor that go unseen. In this painting, I depict myself caught in a moment of reflection, framed by patterned safety glass. The figure is me, but not fully visible. I often feel this way within academic spaces: present, striving, but mediated by invisible structures that distort or diminish my existence. Being undocumented, I’ve learned to navigate systems that are not built for me, where recognition feels conditional and fleeting. The gridded glass becomes more than a visual barrier. It mirrors the institutional frameworks that both protect and confine. It separates while still allowing a glimpse. I’ve found myself relating more to reflections and shadows than to the objects or people that cast them. Always aware, always  negotiating how much of myself to reveal. This piece is both a portrait and a refusal: a quiet assertion of presence, a record of the labor and longing that persist despite being unseen.
