This painting captures a moment reflected in the glass of the UTA transit system, where my uncle, an undocumented immigrant, is working on a construction site within the city. At first glance, it appears to be an abstract urban scene, but within the layers of light, shadow, and refraction, you begin to see him. The reflection becomes a metaphor for the transparency and invisibility of immigrant labor, which is ever present in the shaping of public space yet rarely acknowledged in public discourse.

Through this work, I aim to reveal what is often hidden in plain sight. The fractured and layered planes of the window mirror the social and legal barriers faced by undocumented workers, whose contributions are essential but whose identities are frequently obscured or erased. The vibrant colors and softened forms invite viewers to pause and reconsider how value and visibility are constructed in relation to labor, place, and status.

This piece is not only a portrait of my uncle but also a broader reflection on how immigrant labor threads itself through the daily rhythms of city life. By painting what is seen only in reflection, I hope to affirm the dignity of those like him who build and maintain the world around us quietly, skillfully, and often without recognition.
