Artist Statement:
This painting connects Utah’s past with its present — from the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII at the Topaz Camp to the contemporary detention of undocumented immigrants seeking safety and dignity. The faint but urgent image of outstretched hands behind fogged glass is superimposed over the rocky mountain terrain — a scene of confinement, longing, and resistance.
The mountain stands as both a witness and a monument to recurring systems of exclusion and invisibility. Topaz Shadows asks us to reckon with who is remembered and who remains behind barriers, calling us to honor the land, confront its histories, and make space for new visions of justice.
