Artwork Statement
Shadows of Labor is an abstract meditation on the unseen forces that have shaped my path as both an artist and an immigrant. This piece draws from the visual language of concrete pattern work—forms I absorbed as a child while watching my family labor in construction. The repetition of texture, line, and surface becomes both a tribute and a record of generational endurance. Created during my first year in the MFA program at the University of Utah, the painting captures the shifting shadows cast through my studio window, tracing the passage of time and the quiet rituals of daily making. These shadows became metaphors for the labor I am now able to cultivate as an artist—work made possible only through the physical and emotional sacrifices of my parents. In combining construction motifs with ephemeral light, the piece blurs the boundaries between material labor and creative labor, between foundation and reflection. Shadows of Labor is not only an acknowledgment of where I come from, but a space to honor those whose hands built the possibility for mine to create.
