Art Work Statement:

Water, Hilo, Change in Time is a reflection on personal transformation through education, cultural memory, and the rediscovery of Indigenous roots. As an undocumented immigrant, I have often felt isolated from both American and Mexican communities. I have lived in the in-between, belonging to both and neither. Through learning and storytelling, I have begun to understand that my identity is not defined by exclusion but shaped by tradition and connection to the histories and myths that form my lineage.

In this painting, I incorporate Mesoamerican glyphs to represent the cycle of self-discovery and cultural reclamation. The central figure is a representation of myself, both concealed and revealed through threads inspired by traditional Mexican yarn painting. These threads wrap around and pull away from a classical oil-painted form beneath, expressing the tension between visibility and erasure, between the inherited and the rediscovered. Cultural symbols such as the seven-pointed piñata and cardinal colors like yellow, black, blue, and red guide the eye and root the work in ancestral tradition.

These elements come together to create a space where past and present intertwine. The painting holds the feeling of becoming, of navigating unfamiliar spaces while reaching for something deeply known. Water, Hilo, Time honors the labor of reconnection and the beauty of finding identity not in border lands but in the threads that carry memory, resilience, and belonging.
